“Although Savoy was not known as an avant-garde jazz label (by the 1960s it was mostly focusing on gospel music), a few advanced sessions were made for the label during the period; most are on this two-LP set put out by Arista in 1979. The intense tenor Archie Shepp is heard with a quintet also featuring altoist John Tchicai and either Ted Curson or Don Cherry on trumpet, the esoteric trumpeter Bill Dixon heads an unusual septet for two numbers, the forgotten tenor Marzette Watts stars on two songs (including a haunting version of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” that has Patty Waters and not Amy Schaeffer on the vocal), bass trumpeter Mike Zwerin and drummer Cleve Pozar are heard in a quartet and pianist Paul Bley heads two different groups; a trio with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Pete LaRoca and a quartet with bassist Gary Peacock, drummer Paul Motian and guest tenor John Gilmore. The little-known performances on this two-fer were quite advanced for the period and still sound adventurous.” – allmusic.com
