Tommy Jay & Mike Rep – The Grim-O Comix Sequence

“It’s not essential, but this collection of early, (mostly) acoustic recordings from Ohio oddballs Tommy Jay and Mike Rep is there for you when you want to wade deep into the Ohio rock underground. It’s as stark as a 3 AM street in a small town. It was 1974 and Jay and Rep were in college at OSU, still learning how to play guitar, and just kee-razy about Lou Reed’s Berlin album. They were also into the melodic fragility of Simon and Garfunkel. “Learn to Ride” and the Bowie-ish “Boxboy” are the only rockers here. The rest is Tommy Jay singing morose folky melodies into the shadows.
They made this intended concept album for themselves (they never finished it, actually)… and then forgot about it. Mike Rep dug it up out of his reel-to-reel and cassette tape archive in the summer of ’09 and here it is.” – Jason Hernandez / RYM
