The Woolies – Basic Rock

“Lansing, Michigan’s Woolies weren’t as bracing or confrontational as contemporaries like MC5 or the Stooges (or even the Rationals, for that matter), but they got a lot of mileage out of their recurring gig as Chuck Berry’s backing band, and this 1970 self-released debut has its moments. Their regional hit version of “Who Do You Love” is a rollicking, energetic take on the Bo Diddley chestnut, and it opens the set. Even if these nice young white boys aren’t entirely convincing as bad-asses who wear cobra snakes as neckties, their popped-out arrangement is teenage bubblegum R&B with a professional sheen and just enough grit under the surface.” – allmusic.com
