Radio Topo #021
Born from the rich musical heritage of the Berber people, the music of Algeria is as diverse as Algerian culture itself. While primarily associated with Rai, a form of Algerian folk music known for its adoption of western influences, Kabyle and Chaabi are additional branches within the Algerian music tradition. Chaabi is typically seen as a form of fusion between Algerian traditional songs and pop music, featuring large ensembles, propulsive drums and distinctive stars. Lyrically, Chaabi tends to deal with lighter themes and is frequently played at weddings and festivals. Alternatively, Kabyle music is staunchly traditional, with smaller ensembles and focus on stringed instrumentation, as opposed to danceable rhythms. Lyrically, Kabyle tends to deal with darker themes and was heavily influenced by the French colonization of Algeria. Many of the key players of Kabyle music were imprisoned at some point in their career due to activities with the FLN and the Algerian resistance movement. A subtype of Kablye music is known as Gasba, which is characterized by the sound of gasba reed flute underpinned by hand drums. Culled from a large collection of Algerian 45s from the 50s-70s, This mixtape compiles and explores all of these genres and hopes to serve as entry point to the diverse culture of Algerian music as a whole.
