“Four of the five selections on this LP have some adventurous playing from a quartet consisting of tenor saxophonist Marty Krystall, trumpeter Warren Gale, bassist Buell Neidlinger and drummer Billy Higgins. Krystall, who has mostly worked in the studios of Los Angeles, remains an underrated talent who (like Benny Wallace) has been influenced by both Ben Webster’s tone and Eric Dolphy’s improvising approach while developing his own style. The music includes an original that uses two Stravinsky themes and one piece based a bit on “Night In Tunisia.” Rounding off the album is a 1961 performance of “P.O.” by pianist Cecil Taylor, Neidlinger and drummer Dennis Charles that has been reissued on a Mosaic box set. In fact, three of the four 1979 numbers have since come out on the Neidlinger CD Rear View Mirror, so this album is only for completists who want to get the additional cut (“Modern Gizz”).” Scott Yanow, All Music
