Frederick Knight – I’ve Been Lonely For So Long

Only 1 left in stock

$10.00

The Bessemer, AL native has his finest hour with this, his first and only album for Stax Records. The title track, co-written by his wife Posie, was his biggest hit (#8 R&B and #27 Pop) and, as the opening track, it’s a perfect introduction to an underrated album. “I’ve Been So Lonely So Long”, like much of the album which bears its name, is a layered, gently driving composition, just as indebted to the silky soul of the time as it was to the deeply felt gospel of old. The material is strong and direct, often strange and sometimes dark.
Produced by Knight himself at Sound Of Birmingham, the record is awash in funky rhythms and multi-tracked vocals, a psychedelia-tinged R&B exploration of the many facets of love. Knight wrote or co-wrote over half the songs here, which avoid the generic melodrama of other early 70’s soul. Uptempo numbers “Your Love’s All Over Me” and “Pick’um Up, Put’um Down” are highlights, and the album is capped by a very satisfying rendition of “Someday We’ll Be Together”.
Many of Knights’ songs bear themes of endurance and perseverance, an occurrence that seems prescient in hindsight: the mighty Stax empire would collapse two years later, leaving Knight rudderless until he found a new home and worldwide success on Juana Records. “I’ve Been Lonely For So Long” is a diamond in the rough for soul fans, a strikingly unique and exceptionally affecting work which deserves a wider audience.
