Bruno Abdala, or Abdala, or Ab as he’s known in Brazil is an enthusiastic supporter. Unlike folks of a certain age who center themselves in every story as hero or victim, tres Global North, Bruno is constantly introducing me to or reminding me of some magic that exists in music. Ab is not from the Global North, originating in the city of Goiânia, and that may be key to his heralding of everyone else first instead of himself and his vision.
With Fernando ‘Dinho’ Almeida, they are Cartas de Catalunya, a psychedelic sampled, programmed treatise on collage and feel, where like eating mushrooms, everything feels known and new at the same time. If a theme exists here it’s kaleidoscopic disintegration of the loop. Just as you begin to catch a feel for the melody, the place, the site, it morphs yall, just like a dream you enter the next room to find that you are somewhere that is both new and can’t exist in strict juxtaposition to the place you just were. It’s basically what I wanted every late 90s/early 2000s ‘experimental’ hip-hop.
