Camille Dietrich – Grates of Love

Camille is the rawest cellist working today, straight up, no qualifiers. It’s hard to separate her from her dad and co-conspirator Don Dietrich in the same way it’s incredibly difficult to separate his current playing from Borbetomagus. But what Camille and Don share is the need to get beyond the moorings from which they are primarily known. What does it mean to be the musician daughter of someone widely acknowledged as the rawest instrumentalist on a wind instrument, BY FAR…? What Camille came up on was noise. In the same way that Don attempted and possibly succeeded in compressing Stockhausen into a horn, Camille compresses that even further but reintroduces the orchestration of her classical and symphonic background into the mix moving away from Don’s solid brick waveforms of pure action into waves and swells and electrification and lightning strikes of shred that are nothing less than electro-acoustic electrocution.
